Types of Garage Storage Systems
Purchasing a home with a garage can be a dream come true, yet it may also quickly turn into a nightmare. We have all seen homes in which the garage has been taken over by storage items. The car will no longer fit in there. This doesn't have to be the case. With the variety of garage storage systems available on the market today, you can have a place for your car and storage for items you don't use frequently.
Your garage will become a place that you no longer avoid. Just look carefully when choosing garage storage systems as you do want the system to meet your needs and be easy to use. Garage storage systems come in many different materials. Wire, metal and wood are the most commonly seen. Wire shelving is good for humid areas as it is often plastic coated to avoid corrosion. Also, the open design allows air to circulate
freely. Storage bins will be needed for small items though as they may fall through the wire. This type of shelving can withstand a moderate amount of weight, just take care to make sure they are sturdy after installation.
If your garage storage systems will be withstanding a lot of weight, you may need to go with steel shelving. This is a very durable option and can hold the most amount of weight. Smaller items do not need separate storage bins so the higher cost of steel shelving may be offset by not having to purchase storage bins for these small items.
Wood shelving or wood storage cabinets are another option in garage storage systems. This type of system is only good for lighter items as the prefabricated wood cannot stand as much weight as other shelving types. If portability is a concern, this may be the storage system for you. Yet, care does need to be taken as wood shelves can warp and rot in high humidity or damp garages. Also shelves have a tendency to warp under too much weight.
Whichever material you choose for garage storage systems, look for such features as adjustable shelving, ceiling mounted shelving and heavy duty styles which are specifically designed for storage. The choices are endless. If your plan is to store tools which
weight a great deal, find utility cabinets or shelves made for this purpose. Also, don't hesitate to use a combination of these styles of garage storage systems. One size doesn't fit all so mix and match to suit your individual needs.
Everyone has one area in
their life that is not organized. It may be a big area or it may be a
small one, but it's definitely there. One area that many families seem to
struggle with keeping organized is the garage. At first, this makes no
sense as the garage is where you store your car. That's its purpose, yet
it often becomes a storage
room for other odds and ends. This can become so overwhelming that you are
embarrassed to open your garage door to pull your car in and out because
the neighbors will see your mess. Don't worry. There is help available in
the form of garage storage systems.
Before purchasing any organizational tools, first you must decide what
will continue to be stored in the garage and what will be moved to other
rooms of the house. Don't hesitate to give things away or throw them out
if they are broken or damaged. Once you have made these decisions, you can
begin thinking about garage storage plans. There are many styles available
which can be customized for your needs so it's best to have an idea in
mind before you go shopping. If you just walk in with no preformed ideas,
you will end up buying too much and these things will often not work for
you. Garage storage systems are meant to help, not add more clutter.
Your first choice will be what material to use in your garage storage
scenario. Look for pegboards, wire shelving (that lets debris fall
through), various hooking schemes, or wall racks that may fit your needs
perfectly. Wood storage cabinets are also very attractive . After choosing
the material for your garage storage systems, look for items in which to
hold your items.
Plastic bins are very popular and don't cost too much. Yet they may bend
or even break if you overload them. Look for specialty bins designed to
hold heavy tools if you have those in your garage. Also, look for hooks,
baskets and other accessories that may be exactly what is needed. No
matter which way you go with garage storage systems, your space will stay
much cleaner and you won't be embarassed to let neighbors see in.
